Weed Eater for the Dog Run

I just won a bid on eBay for a 25cc (gasoline powered) Weed Eater string trimmer to clean up all the tall weeds at the dog run. The total cost with shipping was $88.

I spoke with Ann Marie and we'll take this out of the dog run fund we collected last fall.

Unless someone else would like to give it a home, I can keep this in the tool shed at my house on Senator Street. I have no lawn or weeds here so it will only be used for the dog run.

I'll need a couple of volunteers to help with the clean up when the thing arrives... one with a good back and one to help keep the dogs away from the back while we're working.

Regarding the weed eater,

Regarding the weed eater, I'll probably also need to expense a few extra spools and a gallon of gas to the dog run fund. I have the gas can.

Replacement weed eater arrived

I haven't started it yet but it looks in good shape. I also bought extra two-cycle oil and bulk filament. When do we want to do this? I'm gonna need at least one other person to help. This can be rather back-breaking work and we'll need another person to keep the dogs away from the work area.

I also did some investigation of pet-safe herbicides for next year's crop of sawgrass. The answer is that there really isn't any commercial herbicide that's 100% safe for dogs. Surprisingly, Round-Up was given the highest marks because it dries in an hour and doesn't leave a toxic film. But we'd probably need ten gallons of the stuff and it's not cheap.

The best alternative appears to be plain old white vinegar. It will kill any plant in less than an hour but it only works on growing plants, not on seeds, so we would probably need to do this every couple of months from spring through summer. I have a two-gallon pump sprayer we can use and Costco carries two gallon bottles of white vinegar. The bright side: once we get rid of this crop of weeds the next one will be much less dense and easier to deal with.
